The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has decided to shift Asia Cup 2018 to United Arab Emirates (UAE) which was earlier scheduled to be held in India.
It was decided during the annual session of ACC chaired by its president along with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Najam Sethi, after Pakistan objected to play in India.
Schedule for Asia Cup 2018 has also been changed, and now tournament will be played between 13 to 28 of September. It is the 14th edition of this tournament and India is its Defending Champion.
Political problems between Pakistan and India are the main cause for the conversion of tournament venue. “Since this is not World Cup, Champions Trophy or World T20, it was a foregone conclusion that the government would not approve BCCI hosting Pakistan in prevailing circumstances. The public sentiment needs to be respected,” the BCCI official said.
Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have automatically qualified to play for this cup, while other Asian teams like Hong Kong, Oman, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal and UAE would have to play the qualifiers for the sixth slot.
One more thing, no matter the tournament will now be played in UAE but it will still be considered as home series for India.
